all u.s. embassies. last night, president obama spoke with those in libya and egypt urging them to keep the diplomats safe. in libya, u.s. intelligence officials do believe the attack in benghazi may have been preplanned. an al-qaeda video released monday called for revenge for the killing of al-qaeda's number two earlier this year. he was from libya and some believe the video may have been the trigger giving the go ahead for the attacks. ambassador chris stevens, who you just saw there and sean smith and three other americans were killed. three others wounded also when the consulate was fire bombed. president obama strongly condemned the attack. >> this was an attack by a small and savage group, not the people or government of libya. >> the united states condemns in the strongest terms this outrageous and shocking attack. we are work with the government

you you will find delays south of 212. let me take it back be side so we could update this ride for you. the crash occurred on the outer loop of the beltway we was 29 but before you reach george avenue. as a result, over a 49 minute commute trying to get out of college park. additional time needed because of that earlier crash. all of that activity cleared. so not only is the beltway stacked up but big delays southbound on i-95 headed from beltsville down towards the capital beltway. on 66, lanes are open. this happens to be southbound 270 where lanes are open as well. traffic coming southbound out of hite atstown very much below speed headed out towards the truck scales. below speed from business 234 to the car rest area in manassas. traffic slows in centreville and from fair oaks headed eastbound towards 123. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. etraffic. >> thank you. a scary moment now for a group of children in fairfax county after being chased by a beaver that turned out to be

>> we want weren't sure so we are phoning a friend. joining us is dr. jim fredericks. he is an entomologist an the districtor of technical services with the national pest management association. dr.fredericks, are you there? >> good morning. i'm here. >> good morning. >> did you ethe picture? >> i did. and i know exactly what it is. this is one of the coolest caterpillars that you will find. >> a caterpillar. what kind is it? >> this is a spice bush swallow tail caterpillar. >> the spice bush swallow tail caterpillar. >> it is native to the eastern united states. it is actually related to a butterfly that many of you have probably seen, the tiger swallow tail butterfly which is the state insect of virginia.

>> oh! >> okay. >> the thing about this particular caterpillar is they are hard to find. these are masters of mimicry. you can see this caterpillar at first. i heard someone mention that it kind of looks like a snake with these eye spots on its thorax. that is not actually its head. the head is at the very tip of that critter. this is are just to fool predators like birds into thinking that it is something it is not, into thinking it is a snake. >> how big is it. how big do they get? >> as long as your thumb. and often times, they will be green in color, a great green in color. as they mature, they will start to turn this kind of orange or tan color right before they get ready to pupate and make their transition into a butt are fly. >> are they any threat to

people. -- into a butterfly. >> are they any threat to people? not unless your fingers are made of spice bush leaves. that is what they like to eat. when they are younger, they are more brown and white and they kind of resemble bird droppings. >> is that a way to protect itself as well. >> absolutely. a bird, which would be its primary predator is not interested in eating snakes. it is not interested in eating droppings. >> interesting. >> i read somewhere that the back end of the caterpillar will actually lift up where the eye is and try to look like a snake. >> it will pull its head in, tuck its head in, rear up a little bit and in this family of butterflies, this familiar live insects, there is an organ called an osmatarium. it is an organ that will prorude from right behind its head which would be in front of

those eyes that looks maybe lot like the forked tongue of a snake. so this is really an amazing mummic. >> i've never seen one of those. i want to see one now. >> he have with a picture of the caterpillar once it becomes a butterfly. maybe we can show that so everybody -- people are probably more familiar with the butterfly. >> this is one of the most amazing things in nature to me that caterpillars turn into butterflies. when it is a butterfly, is it knowns a spice bush swallow tail butterfly. >> absolutely. the mimicry doesn't stop as a caterpillar. it resemble as a pipe vine swallow tail butterfly. the spice bush swallow tail butt are fly is perfectly good to eat. but a pipe vine swallow tail is a nasty tasting butt are fly. so any bird that will have taste ad pipe vine swallow tail butterfly first would never touch a spice bush swallow tail

as you can see on this thursday morning, we are going to be providing you with the most pictureesque spot of the morning. we made the road trip for two reasons. they are gearing up for a four day celebration that is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the civil war. music, speakers, special tours, children's activities, special exhibits. we're going to have live music, we're going to talk about the significance of this battle. what it meant for the war. and the other reason the appalachian trail runs through here. one of the longest continuing foot paths in the wormed. 2180 miles i think. runs through like 14th 14 states. we're going to talk about that as well. two reasons for you to come up here yourself. isn't this so amazing? i feel like i'm on a movie set. >> you look like you are.
